Junior Women Win Cash SpielĀ
Our Junior Women’s team finished first in the Rick Cotter Memorial Cash Spiel, held October 30 – Nov 1 in Kamloops. Skip Randi Ludwar and her team of Erinn Bartlett, Stacy Ludwar and Katie Hill defeated Amanda McAulay 7-1 in the final. The McAulay name would be familiar to curling fans as McAulay’s father, Greg, won the Canadian and World championships in 2000.

The Ludwar foursome finished the weekend in Kamloops with a 5-1 record and their play was particularly sharp during the semi-final and final games. There were some excellent teams in this annual cash spiel including a former provincial champion Dailene Sivertson from Victoria. This is significant as our local Juniors have their sights set on making it to the BC Junior Playdowns this season. We will know if they qualify out of the West/East Kootenay area by early December when regional playoffs are held. Grand Forks is set to host the Region 1 playdowns the first weekend in December. Looking ahead, the provincials are scheduled for the Juan De Fuca Curling Club in Victoria December 27-31.

The 2007-08 season was memorable for the Randi Ludwar team and their coach Teresa Hiram. They captured the BC Juvenile title and Gold Medal at the BC Winter Games and followed that up by winning the Provincial High School championship. But there was more to come as this outstanding team would win a Bronze Medal at the Optimist International Under-18 event in Winnipeg.

Randi and her team of Erinn Bartlett, Stacy Ludwar and Clare Turner were selected as Curl BC Team of the Year. Randi Ludwar was honoured as Junior Female Athlete of the Year and Teresa was recognized as BC Coach of the Year.

The team will be defending their High School crown in Smithers in early March and Erinn will skip a new Juvenile team later in March in Winfield.

The Grand Forks Curling Club is extremely proud of this outstanding and dedicated team. Their accomplishments are unprecedented in the history of our curling club.
